5 Winter Boat Care Tips To Keep in Mind

If you’re putting your new or used boat up for the season, it’s important to winterize it so it stays in optimum condition for your springtime boating excursions! Take a look at some of our top winter boat care tips below so you can rest assured your boat is well cared for even when not in regular use.

Winter Boat Care Tips

Fuel Stabilizer

If you’re putting your boat into storage or not using it for quite some time, you’ll want to add fuel stabilizer to the tank. Fuel stabilizer helps keep the fuel functional when the boat isn’t being used routinely. Make sure to run the engine after adding fuel stabilizer so that all components necessary get the benefit of it. The boat doesn’t have to be in the water for this step.

Make Some Changes

While you’re at it, this is a good time to change the fuel filter, the oil, and the oil filter. When dirty oil stays in a boat during winter storage, the contaminants can cause corrosion and other damage. Changing the oil and filter can definitely be a DIY project, but if you don’t really want to mess with the…well, mess…we can help! Our service department is just a phone call away.

Antifreeze Flush & Cylinder Fogging

Next, the motor needs to be flushed with antifreeze. Even if winter temps around here don’t hit Arctic-level of cold, if there’s any water in the motor, it can run the risk of freezing – which can lead to damage of internal components and parts. Flushing it with antifreeze can be highly effective in preventing that damage!

It’s also a good idea to spray fogging oil into the carburetors as a rust preventative for the cylinders. You can spray that in after the antifreeze treatment (but while the motor is still running).

Take Care of the Propellers

Winterizing your propellers will help extend their life! A quick rundown:

  • Remove propellers
  • Drain gear lube
  • If the gear lube drips in a lumpy or milky consistency, schedule some boat service with us right away. Otherwise, you can simply replace it after draining. (Take the old gear lube/oil to a disposal facility. Again, if you have use handle it, we’ll take care of this step, too!)
  • Next, put the propellers back on if you plan to store your boat inside. If you’ll be storing it outside, treat the props shaft with plenty of grease and then a plastic covering.
