Things to Inspect and Check

There are certain aspects of your boat you need to inspect for signs of damage and either replace or repair before getting out on the water at all. This list should include:

  • The hull: inspect the hull for blisters, cracks, or other damage. This should be repaired immediately to keep water out.
  • The engine: check for loose connections, corrosion, or leaks. Change the oil, replace the fuel filter, and inspect the belts and hoses.
  • Safety equipment: all damaged or expired/outdated safety equipment should be replaced. This should include first aid kits, fire extinguishers, life jackets, and flares.
  • The propeller and rudder: make sure the propeller and rudder are securely attached and functioning properly.
  • The batteries and electrical systems: the electrical connections, navigation equipment, and lights should be checked. Replace any burned-out bulbs and make sure all the wiring is secure. Then, check to make sure the batteries are fully charged and in good condition. Clean the terminals and check the electrolyte levels if applicable.
  • Fluid levels: check the levels of all fluids: hydraulic, steering, and coolant, and top off where needed.
  • Clean and wax: time to scrub it down! Scrub away the dirt, grime, and mildew buildup on the interior of the boat and wash the exterior to remove salt, algae, and built-up debris. Give it a good coat of wax to protect the finish.
  • The trailer: inspect the trailer for any signs of damage, the tires for proper inflation and treat wear, and the lights and brakes for functionality.
  • The manual: review your owner’s manual and safety procedures just as a bit of refresher. This includes navigation rules, safety equipment, and emergency protocols.
