6 Boat Storage Tips for End-of-Season Care

If you’re putting your new or used boat up for the winter, it’s essential to store it properly. Why? Proper storage helps prevent damage to your boat, including engine damage and mildew, when you’re ready to get back out on the water in the spring. Here are a few boat storage and service tips you should keep in mind!

No one, we repeat no one, is beyond reading the instruction manual. Your boat’s instruction manual will give you specifics on certain upkeep and storage procedures. Read it. Obey it.

Exterior Cleaning

For the exterior of your boat, you’ll want to make sure to do these steps:

  • Pull out hull drain plug
  • Scrub away dirt and debris, and wax the hull – especially if the boat is staying out of the water over the winter
  • Check for cracks, tears, blisters, etc. If there’s any damage, schedule some professional repair before putting your boat into storage. Repairing damage while it’s early will save you major repair expenses (and a major headache) later.

Fluid Flush

This is where you need to take specific steps based on whether you’re storing for short- or long-term. This step includes draining the oil, changing the filter, flushing out any build up or sludge, and replacing the oil. You’ll want flush the coolant and add the antifreeze recommended by your boat’s instruction manual, and run it through the bilge, sump, and air-conditioner pumps.

Mechanical Inspection

You can take care of some basic inspection of mechanical parts, such as the following:

  • Disconnect battery and clean any corrosion
  • Charge battery fully and store indoors
  • Check all wires and hoses to make sure connections are secure
  • Remove drive belts should be removed so they avoid cracking during the cold season

Interior Cleaning

After you’ve cleaned the exterior, it’s time to scrub down the interior! This prep includes the following tasks:

  • Check coolers, refrigerator, and compartments for any left-behind or forgotten food and drinks
  • Remove all electronics (radio, GPS unit, etc)
  • Scrub vinyl cushions and seats, and treat them with vinyl protector
